Masterson was born on Long Island, New York, to Carol (his manager) and Peter Masterson, a State Farm Insurance agent.[1] His parents divorced in 1984.[2] He has a younger brother, Christopher Masterson, who portrayed the unruly Francis on Malcolm in the Middle. His additional siblings, all of whom are younger, are paternal half-brother, Will Masterson (who attends the University of Southern California), maternal half-brother, Jordan "Jordy" Reaiche (pronounced Reesh) and maternal half-sister, Alanna Reaiche.[3] Jordy and Alanna are both actors who have been credited professionally with their half-brothers' surname Masterson, though it is not the surname of either of their parents.[4][5] Jordy and Alanna have each appeared in many television series, including Malcolm in the Middle (each appeared in a separate episode), How I Met Your Mother (Jordy) and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Alanna).[6][7] Masterson's stepfather, Joe Reaiche, played professional rugby league on the Australian National Rugby League's Sydney City Roosters.[4]
Masterson starred as Justin in Cybill, Jimmy Girvin in Roseanne, Steven Hyde in That '70s Show, and has made several guest appearances on Punk'd and MADtv. He is a co-owner of Dolce, a restaurant he founded with That '70s Show co-stars Ashton Kutcher and Wilmer Valderrama, who are also his close friends. Along with Kutcher and Valderrama, he co-hosted the Fox TV special Woodstock 1999. He had a part in the 2008 comedy Yes Man.
Masterson frequently DJs at Los Angeles night clubs under the name DJ Mom Jeans, formerly DJ Donkey Punch. He played a 2-hour set at the 2008 Lollapalooza festival in Chicago. Additionally, with local nightlife impressario Brent Bolthouse, he co-hosted a Monday night radio show titled Feel My Heat, on Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles. The show was canceled in October 2008. Masterson stars with his real-life fiance, Bijou Phillips, in the 2009 drama The Bridge to Nowhere.[8]
Masterson was raised as a member of the Church of Scientology. He once said, "I have been acting since age 4. I have always been working and I have always been in Scientology my entire life. Each service in Scientology is something I have added to my toolbox of data for living."[9] In December 2005, he helped promote the gala opening of Scientology's "Psychiatry: An Industry of Death" museum.[10]
He is engaged to Bijou Phillips, the couple have been dating since 2005.[11]
