Dark New Day is an American hard rock band that formed in 1995, disbanded, and re-formed in late 2004.
The band was originally formed in 1995, by five people: Brett Hestla of Virgos Merlot, Troy McLawhorn of Doubledrive, Clint Lowery of Sevendust, Corey Lowery of Stereomud, Stuck Mojo, and Will Hunt of Skrape. But they didn't make a record through the years because the members were in different bands until they came together again in 2004. The band is considered a sort of supergroup considering the fact that all five members have spent time in nu-metal and hard rock groups of varying success, although the band members disagree with this classification, largely because, with the exception of Sevendust, none of their prior projects fared very well commercially.
On June 14, 2005, the band released their first album, Twelve Year Silence through Warner Bros. Records. The first single from the effort, "Brother", was a surprise hit on active and alternative stations, although the follow-up, "Pieces", did not fare nearly as well.
On September 5, 2006, Dark New Day released an EP through iTunes called Black Porch that features new tracks "Breakdown" and "Storm" as well as acoustic versions of songs from Twelve Year Silence. The only single released thus far is the acoustic version of "Follow The Sun Down". A hard copy of the EP is currently up in the air, although there are hopes to release it before the end of the year.
Dark New Day have also posted 2 new songs on their MySpace page for stream: "Fist From The Sky," a much heavier and faster-paced song than anything that was on Twelve Year Silence ; and "Hail Mary," a slower, almost progressive song, almost reminiscent of one of Brett's previous bands, ViRGOS. Both songs retain the melody and excellent full-band harmonies that the band has become known for, while adding new dimension to the Dark New Day catalog.
On May 18, it was announced that both Will Hunt and Troy McLawhorn had temporarily joined Evanescence as their guitarist and drummer and will being touring and playing live with them until at least September 2007.[1] Lead singer Amy Lee stated that "We're just borrowing Will and Troy for awhile" and that they would not be leaving Dark New Day.[2] Hunt and McLawhorn will tour with Evanescence until at least September 2007 to finish the Family Values tour,[3] though it is unknown if they will remain with the band beyond that time.
In September 2007, Clint posted on Dark New Day's MySpace page saying that the band returned to the studio to record their next album with producer Dave Bendeth.[4]
