Biography

Dark New Day formed in early 2005 and was quickly billed as a supergroup for the active rock set, since its membership came from various name-brand acts. Clint Lowery (guitar/vocals) had been a cofounder of Sevendust, while his brother Corey Lowery (bass) had played in Stuck Mojo and Stereomud; guitarist Troy McLawhorn was a veteran of Doubledrive, and vocalist/guitarist Brett Hestla had been in Virgos Merlot before becoming the touring bassist for Creed. Will Hunt had drummed for acts like Skrape and Tommy Lee. The band debuted with a track on the soundtrack for the spring 2005 horror film House of Wax before issuing the full-length debut, Twelve Year Silence, the following June. Tours with acts like Crossfade and Seether followed. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide

Dark New Day is an American hard rock band that formed in 1995, disbanded, and re-formed in late 2004.

History

The band was originally formed in 1995, by five people: Brett Hestla of Virgos Merlot, Troy McLawhorn of Doubledrive, Clint Lowery of Sevendust, Corey Lowery of Stereomud, Stuck Mojo, and Will Hunt of Skrape. Yet it wasn't until 2005 that they actually released an album due to occupations with other bands. The band is considered a sort of supergroup due to the fact that all five members have spent time in nu metal and hard rock groups of varying success. The band members, however, disagree with this classification largely because, with the exception of Sevendust, none of their prior projects fared very well commercially.

On June 14, 2005, the band released their first album, Twelve Year Silence through Warner Bros. Records. The first single from the effort, "Brother", was a surprise hit on active and alternative stations, although the follow-up single , "Pieces", did not fare nearly as well.

On September 5, 2006, Dark new Day released an EP through iTunes called Black Porch that features new tracks "Breakdown" and "Storm" as well as acoustic versions of songs from Twelve Year Silence. The only single that was released was the acoustic version of "Follow the Sun Down".

In 2007, the band posted 2 songs on their MySpace page: "Fist from the Sky," a much heavier and faster-paced song than anything that was on Twelve Year Silence ; and "Hail Mary," a slower, almost progressive song, almost reminiscent of one of Brett's previous bands, ViRGOS. Both songs retain the melody and excellent full-band harmonies that the band has become known for, while adding new dimension to the Dark New Day catalog.

In September 2007, Clint posted on Dark new Day's MySpace page saying that the band returned to the studio to record their next album with producer Dave Bendeth[1] and on December 5, 2007, the band posted a blog on their MySpace page announcing that the album mixing was complete, and that they would soon issue a statement regarding a release date. It has been speculated that the album would be released sometime in 2008.

They have recently posted a song on their MySpace page, Goodbye, which has been confirmed by Will to be on the new album.

Some possible track titles for the new album include:

  • Fiend
  • Goodbye
  • Hail Mary
  • Outside
  • Simple
  • Vicious Thinking
  • Anywhere
  • Fist from the Sky
  • Dear Addi

On March 25, 2008, Clint posted a blog on the Dark new Day Myspace page saying that he has left the band so he can rejoin his former band Sevendust. It is unclear if Dark new Day will stay together, but blogs by Will Hunt hint around about staying together.

On May 25, 2008, the band Sw1tched posted a blog on their myspace stating that B.C. Kochmit had joined Dark new Day as their new guitarist. A press release is expected very soon from both Dark new Day and B.C. Kochmit.

On May 28, 2008, Dark new Day officially announced their new lineup, including Bradley "B.C." Kochmit as their new lead guitarist and without Troy McLawhorn. It was not announced where Troy will end up permanently, though it was alluded to in an interview that Troy would now be a permanent member of Seether. They also announced they would be releasing a series of Demo Tracks as downloadable "releases" while we wait for their new album. Two songs from these were put onto their myspace, "Fiend" (Version 1) and "I Don't Need You".

On July 28, 2008, three new songs were added to their myspace, "Anywhere", "Simple" and "Vicious Thinking", as well as another version of "Fiend", and "Goodbye" and "Hail Mary", which have been posted before.

On September 6, 2008, Dark New Day played their first show after more than a year at the Three Bears Cafe in Marietta, GA. And with luck, Sevendust had canceled a show due to Hurricane Hannah along the east coast. Clint Lowery was able to appear for the show and perform the full set (including new songs) with his former band Dark new Day with new guitarist B.C. Kochmit on guitar. It was noted and photographed that Brett Hestla is now also playing guitar along with being lead vocalist for Dark new Day.

On September 9, 2008, Will Hunt posted a blog on the bands' myspace stating that the show was top notch 100%. In the blog he also mentioned a string of shows to come before the end of 2008, and to also expect new Dark new Day music available before Christmas 2008.

In early October 2008, it was announced that B.C. Kochmit and Corey Lowery have started a new band called Violent Plan. No music has been made available yet. It is believed that this is more of a side project, and Dark new Day will continue on as well.

On February 7, 2009, after months of no word on the album. Former guitarist Clint Lowery posted a blog entry stating the likely possibility that the sophomore album will never be released. He did say that there was a chance of it getting released on itunes but no word of when. He also stated that he didn't know what shape the band was in but that it was most likely deceased.

Korn, Sevendust, Evanescence & Seether

In 2007, Clint toured with Korn as their live guitarist for 8 months until he left in October 2007. On March 26, 2008, Clint announced that he had rejoined Sevendust, and will be touring with them for the indefinite future. In a blog stated on the bands' myspace, Will announced that Clint would be happy to join the band for any shows in the near future during time off.

On May 17, 2007, it was announced that both Hunt and McLawhorn would temporarily join Evanescence as their touring guitarist and drummer, respectively.[2] Evanescence lead singer Amy Lee stated that "We're just borrowing Will and Troy for awhile" and that they would not be leaving Dark New Day.[3] Their last show with Evanescence was in December 2007 when the band finished touring in support of The Open Door. It is unknown at this point whether or not they will be a part of any future projects with the band.

Troy McLawhorn has joined Seether as their permanent 2nd guitarist, but will be reuniting with Dark new Day for a select few shows sometime in the near future when he has time off during touring and off the road.

Trivia

  • The song "Pieces" contains a verse from the song "Back Again" by The Devine, a band that frontman Brett Hestla also sang for, that eventually became Virgos Merlot. The verse reads "The wheels they turn for you, a deity for two. Holding on it's true, won't bring it back again. The way you look my friend, it's closer to the end, I'm holdin' out my hand to bring it back again." This verse is also included in the song "Could've" by Virgos with a slight variation in words.
  • The song "Pieces" was recently featured as background music for menus in the videogame WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2006.
  • The song "Brother" is one of the songs that comes with the Canadian, U.K., U.S. and Australian release of the Xbox 360.
  • In addition to his time as frontman for The Devine and Virgos Merlot, Brett Hestla was also briefly a touring bassist for the band Creed. Hestla also runs his own studio in Orlando, Florida. Besides Dark New Day, bands that have used Hestla's facilities include Faktion, Framing Hanley, Charetta, Signum A.D., Waking Season, and Dmanufacture
  • Sevendust remains the only band in the history of Dark New Day's members that still exists and continues to be successful; all the other groups had disbanded prior to Dark New Day's formation.
