David James Arquette (born September 8, 1971 in
Winchester, Virginia) is an American
actor. He became known during the late 1990s, after having starred
in several Hollywood films, including the films of the
Scream trilogy. He has since had several television roles, including playing Jason
Ventress on ABC's In
Case of Emergency. In addition to his acting career Arquette took a brief foray into professional wrestling in early
2000, winning the WCW World Heavyweight
Championship — the top title of World Championship Wrestling, in the process.[1]
Biography
Early life
Arquette was born in a Subud commune
in Bentonville, Virginia. His father was actor Lewis
Arquette, and his grandfather was comedian Cliff Arquette, best remembered for his
"Charley Weaver" character, a fixture on the original Hollywood Squares. His
mother, Brenda "Mardi" Nowak, was a pin-up girl and actress who appeared in such films as
Olga's House of Shame.[2]
Arquette's mother was Jewish, the daughter of a Holocaust
refugee from Poland, while his father was a convert to Islam and a descendant of explorer Meriwether Lewis.[3][4] Arquette's siblings Patricia,
Rosanna, Alexis and Richmond are all actors.
Hollywood career
Arquette achieved his biggest success in the slasher horror trilogy Scream as Dewey Riley. He also met his wife Courteney Cox, who
ironically played Gale Weathers, on the set. True to their alter-egos in the trilogy, they became a married couple. They have
also appeared together in a Coke advertisement on TV in
2003. The two are currently executive producers for the TBS series Daisy Does America. In addition, they are also executive producers of Dirt, the show in which Cox herself stars.
Arquette appeared in the videogame ESPN NFL 2K5 and lent his voice as a celebrity adversary and his very own team, the Los
Angeles Locos. Arquette is also unlockable as a Free Agent in Season Mode. He appeared in the 2001 EA videogame SSX Tricky as the voice of lead character, Eddie.
Presently Arquette is starring alongside Jonathan Silverman and Kelly Hu in the ABC comedy series In Case of
Emergency. Arquette is currently on tour promoting his new film The
Tripper.
Filmography
Professional wrestling
In 2000, after filming the World Championship Wrestling (WCW) produced
movie Ready to Rumble, Arquette was brought in to WCW storylines. He made his first appearance on the April
12 episode of Thunder, first sitting in the crowd, and then leaping in to the
ring for a (worked) confrontation with Eric Bischoff and his New Blood stable.[5] He
formed an alliance with Chris Kanyon and World Heavyweight Champion Diamond Dallas
Page, and with their help, defeated Bischoff in a singles match on April 24 episode of
Monday Nitro.[6] The next night — for a show to be aired April 26 — Arquette
teamed with Page in a match against Bischoff and Jeff
Jarrett with the stipulation that whichever man got the pin would take the championship. Arquette again pinned Bischoff to
win the match, thus making him the WCW World Heavyweight Champion.[7] At May 7, 2000's Slamboree Arquette turned on Page and helped Jarrett win the title in a Triple Cage match — the very same match featured in Ready to Rumble —
which also featured himself.[8] After losing the title,
Arquette made one last appearance on WCW television, taking part in a promo segment on the May 8 Nitro with Bischoff,
Jarrett, and other New Blood members to announce that his entire title run and friendship with Page was a "swerve" before Page ran down and delivered a Diamond Cutter to him.[9]
During his short run as champion Arquette was mostly used as comic relief. Apart from
the show where he lost the title, he only appeared on one show as champion, the May 1
Nitro. On that show a vignette was shown, filmed from the
set of his film 3000 Miles to Graceland, that featured both his wife,
Courteney Cox-Arquette, and their co-star, Kurt Russell. In the vignette, Courteney
informed Russell that Arquette was the WCW Champion, causing Russell to laugh and walk off and Arquette to chase after him with a
steel chair. Also on the show, he was seen backstage wetting
himself in fear and constantly attempted to "give back" the belt. He did, however, successfully defend the belt against
Tank Abbott with help from Diamond Dallas Page.[10]
In 2002, Arquette made one more appearance on a professional wrestling show, popping up in the crowd at the February 8 2002 episode of the World Wrestling Federation's SmackDown! holding up a sign that read "Former World Champion."[11]
