Laminate countertops are made of two or morelayers of material
sandwiched together with a plastic resin and sealed by a
thermocoupled process. Melamine plastic is a major component of
many countertops as well as layers of kraft paper and decorative
paper. Newer plastic sheets used for laminates have included glass
fibers and carbon to strengthen the final product. To make laminate
countertops, the layers of plastic and paper are run through a
large laminating machine that uses high pressure and heat to weld
the layers together. Formaldehyde is sometimes used to strengthen
the final product.
