The 14 boats of the Russian (then Soviet Union) Delta III-class ballistic missile submarines (Project 667BDR, Russian name Kal'mar, or squid) was first constructed between 1974 and 1976. The first boat was launched on February 11, 1976 and passed sea trials soon thereafter.
Of the 14 boats originally built, only 4 are currently in active service. The Delta III's were superseded by the Delta IV and Typhoon-class submarines.
