Denis (James) Matthews

(b Coventry, 27 Feb 1919; d Birmingham, 24 Dec 1988). English pianist. He studied at the RAM and made his London début in 1939. From 1946 he toured widely, appearing with major orchestras and the Griller and Amadeus quartets. He specialized in the Viennese Classics, which he played with an awareness of the performing practice of the period. He was professor of music at Newcastle University (1971-84). Among his books is Beethoven (1985).
