In Spain they have a classification system like in France and Italy.
In Spain they divided the top-classification as well, namely into DO (Denominación de Origen) and DOCa (Denominación de Origen Calificada). The first wine region to receive the DOCa status was Rioja in 1991. Followed nine years later in 2000 by the Catalan region Priorat (aka Priorato). The wine region Ribera del Duero was rewarded the DOCa status starting with the vintage of 2008.
