(electronics) An electric double layer formed at the surface of contact between a metal and a semiconductor having different work functions, because the mobile carrier charge density is insufficient to neutralize the fixed charge density of donors and acceptors. Also known as barrier layer (deprecated); blocking layer (deprecated); space-charge layer.
