# What are derivatives?

In calculus, a derivative is basically the slope of a function. For example the derivative of 3x + 1 is 3, and the derivative of 5x 2 is 10x. A derivative can also be a word …derived (made) from another word. For example, "electricity" is a derivative of "electric". A derivative can also be a compound made from another compound (as in chemistry). Anything that "results from deviation" can be called a derivative. This basically means that if something is made from, or branches of something else, it can be called a derivative. ( Full Answer )
