Well, I've been a psychiatrist for 25 years AND hav suffered from Primary Insomnia starting at about age 14 (Noludar-300 [methyprylon] which hits with all the strength of two 100mg Seconal or Nembutal.) Noludar never was abused or sold on the street because so few of us new about it. The FDA banned amphetamine+barbituates or other sedatives around 1975. In the US, UK and

Canada, there are NO drug marketed as an HYPNOTIC (doctor-talk for "sleeping pill") that contains amphetamines When we talk about amphetamines among ourselves or to our patients and their parents, it's common knowledghe that we are talking about Dexedrine (d-amphetamine SO4 or related salts, as found in Adderall); Benzedrine (amphetamine sulfate - discontinued in the US);

methamphetamine HCL [desoxyphedrine] or other salts. Ritalin is not an amphetamine, btw. In the annnals of drugs of abuse, Preludin (phenmetrazine), a diet pill was reported to produced asl the effects of meth, yet not being related chemically. I think it was disconituned country by country at the manufacturer's request. By the early '70s, this drug was produced and sold by CIBA-Geigy [merger of two highly-regarded drug companies]. There's a reason Abbott Labs won't DC or SHIP any Desoxyn; they don't want their company's venerable name atached to anything even approaching methamphetamine HCl (which Abbott marketed as Desoxyn tabs and Gradumets; Desbutal [Desoxyn 5mg-Nembutal 30mg.

Only in the unlikely event of a psycactive drug's having the exact opposite effect on a patient. I've seen that once or twice with Halcion, but we don't give amphetamines for it!
