The central shaft of a long bone consisting mainly of compact bone surrounding a cavity (see medullary cavity).

Pl. diaphyses.
1. the portion of a long bone between the ends or extremities, which are usually articular, and wider than the shaft; it consists of a tube of compact bone, enclosing the medullary cavity. Called also shaft.
2. the portion of a bone formed from a primary center of ossification.

The diaphysis is the main or mid section (shaft) of a long bone. It is made up of cortical bone and usually contains bone marrow and adipose tissue (fat).

Clinical significance

An aggressive form of childhood bone cancer, Ewing's sarcoma, usually occurs in the diaphysis.[1]

Other diaphyseal tumors or lesions include lymphoma, myeloma, fibrous dysplasia, enchondroma, adamantinoma, and osteoid osteoma.[2]
