Biography

American character actor Dick O'Neill began showing up in films in 1961. Most of O'Neill's movie roles were in the supporting category, e.g. his portrayal of Sol Zuckermann in The Buddy Holly Story. His extensive TV credits include recurring roles on at least four weekly series. Dick O'Neill was seen as Judge Praetor D. Hardcastle in Rosetti and Ryan (1977), street-smart Malloy in Kaz (1978), corporate vice president Arthur Broderick in Empire (1984), and Fred Wilkinson in the 1987 episodes of Falcon Crest. Fans of the detective series Cagney and Lacey will remember O'Neill for playing Charlie Cagney. Before entering film and television, O'Neill was a well established supporting actor on the New York stage where he appeared on and off Broadway. In the early '50s, O'Neill was a charter member of the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. Dick O'Neill (August 29, 1928November 17, 1998) was an American stage, film and television character actor best known for playing Irish cops, fathers, judges and army generals. He began his acting career as an original company member of Arena Stage in Washington, DC.

He served in the navy then returned to the theater. In the late 1950s, he began appearing on television. His television credits cover everything from Car 54, Where Are You?, The Honeymooners, Barney Miller, Sanford and Son, Kaz, M*A*S*H, Facts of Life, Family Matters, Mad About You, Murder She Wrote, Three's Company, Magnum PI, Dark Justice, Cheers, Dharma & Greg, Cybill to Home Improvement. He was probably best known for his role as Charlie Cagney in the television hit Cagney and Lacey. Before moving to California, he appeared on the Broadway stage in such hits as Promises, Promises, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, and Skyscraper.

His film credits include The Mugger, Pretty Poison, The Taking of Pelham 123, The Buddy Holly Story, MacArthur, House Calls, Posse, The Jerk, The Mosquito Coast, Loose Cannons, Prizzi's Honor and Wolfen. Mr. O'Neill died at the age of 70.
