Horen, Die, a monthly periodical founded by Schiller in 1795 and edited by him. Its name (after the horae) is symptomatic of his classical orientation at the time. Its aim was aesthetic, the cultivation and extension of literary and artistic taste under the category of truth. In Schiller's own words ‘Man widmet sie der schönen Welt zum Unterricht und zur Bildung, und der gelehrten zu einer freien Forschung der Wahrheit und zu einem fruchtbaren Umtausch der Ideen.’ Political and religious subjects were excluded.
Die Horen was published by Schiller's new-won friend in Stuttgart, Cotta. Goethe, W. and A. von Humboldt, Herder, and A. W. Schlegel participated. Outstanding contributions were Schiller's Über die ästhetische Erziehung des Menschen in einer Reihe von Briefen, Über naive und sentimentalische Dichtung, and Belagerung von Antwerpen, and Goethe's Römische Elegien, Unterhaltungen deutscher Ausgewanderten, and Benvenuto Cellini. The journal, which achieved only a modest circulation, ceased publication with the third volume in 1797.
