Dismemberment is a very ancient and widespread motif in initiation, especially in shamanistic initiation, in which one is taken apart and put back together in a renewed, improved form. If the experience does not feel unpleasant during a dream, dismemberment may well indicate the closing of one phase of life and rebirth into a new phase. If accompanied by strong emotions of fear and anxiety, dismemberment may simply reflect a feeling of "coming apart."

Biography

Longtime proponents of the grinding, powerful sound of no-frills Swedish death metal, Dismember was originally formed in Stockholm in 1988 as a power trio featuring vocalist/bassist Robert Sennebäck, guitarist David Blomqvist, and drummer Fred Estby. The group recorded a couple of demo tapes, but went on hiatus in late 1989 when Estby left to join Carnage; Blomqvist played with Entombed as a bassist, then joined Carnage as a second guitarist during the recording of their 1991 debut. However, Carnage imploded when guitarist Michael Amott departed to join Carcass, so Blomqvist, Estby, and Carnage vocalist Matti Karki reconvened Dismember and recorded a demo early in 1991. Sennebäck returned a short time later, and new bassist Richard Cabeza (formerly of Carbonized) was also added to the lineup. Dismember signed with Nuclear Blast and issued their debut album, Like an Ever Flowing Stream, in May 1991. The band toured heavily behind the record, also releasing a five-track EP titled Pieces in 1992; that same year, Dismember successfully defended themselves from an obscenity charge in the U.K. stemming from the song "Skin Her Alive." The experience informed the graphic Indecent and Obscene, which was released in 1993 and displayed a partial move toward melodicism, although Dismember's sound still echoed the unearthly heaviness of early Entombed. 1995's Massive Killing Capacity continued to refine the group's style, and helped make the band more visible in the death metal underground. 1997's Death Metal made clear that Dismember's basic Swedish death sound wasn't going to be altered all that much. Cabeza left the band before the recording of 2000's Hate Campaign, which featured Mercyful Fate bassist Sharlee D'Angelo. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

History

The band formed in Stockholm in 1988. After a hiatus, during which several members joined Carnage, the band began recording in earnest in 1991 and released their debut, Like an Ever Flowing Stream in 1991. The album became an early example of Scandinavian death metal and established the band's fanbase, which grew with the release of Pieces (1992). The song "Skin Her Alive" prompted an obscenity charge in the United Kingdom, against which the band successfully defended themselves.

In 1993 Dismember released Indecent & Obscene, their most successful album ever, which featured their most famous theme: "Dreaming in Red" videoclip was shown very frequently in MTV's Headbanger's Ball.

Like many of the other Scandinavian death metal bands, Dismember began softening their sound in the mid-1990s, with 1995's Massive Killing Capacity more melodic approaches, which had a good public response. Nevertheless, they attempted a return to style with 1997's Death Metal, which ultimately became a sales disappointment.

Dismember set a new path and signed for Karmageddon Records. In 2004, they released their sole album with that label titled Where Ironcrosses Grow and sounds close to Hate Campaign and is heavily inspired by Iron Maiden and Autopsy.

They switched record companies again in 2005, signing to Regain Records now, who bought the rights to their earlier albums as well and released them as luxury digipak editions. In 2006, Dismember released their seventh album The God That Never Was continuing in the style of its predecessor. The band spent February on the road in Europe. In November 2006, Dismember toured Europe as part of the Masters of Death tour, with Grave, Unleashed, Entombed and Exterminator.

After the release of 'The God That Never Was' and some touring, Estby left the band "after long and careful consideration". In a posting on the official site on April 20, 2007, Estby cites the demands of touring and the needs of his family as key reasons for him leaving the band.[1]. His statements appears as "My decision to put my family in first hand makes it impossible to keep on touring and commit to the band full time. I want to thank all the fans, friends, bands and all the other cool people i've met through the years and I wish Dismember all the best in the future. Fred."

In April 2008, they released their eighth album, "Dismember."

Dismember released a two-disc DVD titled Under Bloodred Skies in late July 2009. The live concerts were filmed in the Netherlands and at the 2008 Party.San Open Air Festival in Bad Berka, Germany. The DVD also included a documentary and interviews with band members. The cover art was created by Erik Danielsson of Trident Art.[2]
