Biography

Even though their bright, peppy pop recalls Dexy's Midnight Runners, Big Country, XTC, Talking Heads, and other new wave luminaries, Fife, Scotland's Dogs Die in Hot Cars grew up on a musical diet of Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band -- which allegedly stumbled upon their odd name while inhaling helium balloons -- got their start while vocalists/guitarists Craig Macintosh and Gary Smith, bassist Lee Worrall, keyboardist/vocalist Ruth Quigley, and drummer Laurence Davey were still in high school. After playing gigs at their school, the group graduated to playing covers at local pubs, eventually sneaking a few of their own songs onto the set list as well. A few years later, after saving their money, buying equipment, and writing songs, Dogs Die in Hot Cars moved to Glasgow to focus on their music. In summer 2003, the band released their first single on Radiate, "I Love You Because I Have To." The song's mix of ska rhythms and new wave pop hooks won the band critical and commercial acclaim, leading them to sign with V2. While the band was touring in support of the single, Macintosh was electrocuted during a show they played at Dundee's Cotton Club. Despite suffering burns on his hands, Macintosh was otherwise unharmed and decided to continue the tour. After another tour that fall, Dogs Die in Hot Cars recorded with Clive Langer, who also worked with Dexy's Midnight Runners. Early in 2004, the band made their major-label debut with the Man Bites Man EP, which they followed up a few months later with another single, Godhopping. Their debut album, Please Describe Yourself, came out later that year. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

History

In July 2004 they released their debut album Please Describe Yourself (Produced by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley) which included the tracks "I Love You 'Cause I Have To", "Godhopping" and "Lounger". "Godhopping" peaked at #24 on the UK Singles Chart and remains the band's biggest hit. "I Love You 'Cause I Have To" peaked at #32 on the UK Singles Chart and narrowly missed the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in the United States

The band's name comes from a RSPCA campaign to advise dog owners not to leave their pets in hot cars and has often been a strong talking point of polarized views. In an interview with U.S. Rolling Stone magazine, singer/guitarist Craig Macintosh mentioned that "Rolling Stone in Australia said it was the best band name in the history of rock & roll. But then the NME said it was the worst".[1]

The band lists their influences among others as Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Beatles and Talking Heads. Craig Macintosh's voice and singing style have a striking resemblance to that of Andy Partridge's of the British band XTC.

On September 18, 2007 the band posted a blog on their MySpace website indicating that they had decided to end all work on a new album. With this news they also said that they are going their separate ways and may or may not reunite.

A song of the band's, entitled 'Nobody Teaches Life Anything' (found on 2004 release Man Bites Man EP) was used in a lengthy television advertising campaign in the UK by Boots.

Around April 2008 the band began to release their second album demos along with their individual track files, free to download from their website for people to use to make their own versions of the songs and then send those versions back to the band. The band would then later announce a closing date, after which they are going to compile the second album using ideas from the submitted versions from their fans, and share 50% of the royalties that come from its release with everyone who has contributed towards making it. The project was called "Dogs Die In Hot Cars is making Pop Nonsense"[2]. The closing date was announced for May 1, 2009 - no information has yet been given as to how long the compiling process may take, or an estimated date of release for the album.
