Domenico (Carlo Maria) Dragonetti

(b Venice, 10 April 1763; d London, 16 April 1846). Italian double bass player and composer. He played in Venetian theatre orchestras before settling in London in 1794, appearing regularly in concerts and provincial festivals for the next half century; he was renowned for his expressive, virtuoso performances, on a large, three-string instrument, with the cellist Robert Lindley. His numerous works, mostly for double bass, include eight concertos and over 30 string quintets. His giant double bass is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
