Donkey Konga

Games: Donkey Konga

Game Description

This Namco-developed Donkey Kong game is made to be beat, with a special bongo-style controller that consists of two drum pads and a small microphone. The controller allows gamers to drum along to songs such as Queen's "We Will Rock You," "Rock Lobster" by the B-52's, Devo's "Whip It," and other finger-tapping licensed tunes, as well as a selection of familiar themes from Nintendo games like Super Mario Bros., Pokémon, and The Legend of Zelda. Following scrolling onscreen prompts, akin to those found in Dance Dance Revolution and other rhythm-based games, players must clap their hands or hit the left, right, or both drum heads as directed, all in time to the music. Success is rewarded with unlocked mini-games and new songs. A multiplayer mode allows up to four gamers to compete or cooperate through the same tune.

Donkey Konga (ドンキーコンガ Donkī Konga?) is a GameCube rhythm video game starring the ape Donkey Kong, developed by Namco and published by Nintendo. Instead of the standard GameCube controllers, the game is intended to be played with a special controller called the DK Bongos that resemble two small bongo drums.

Donkey Konga was developed by the same team of people who made the Taiko: Drum Master series for the Playstation 2. The songs include hits such as Louie Louie, We Will Rock You, Shining Star, Rock Lobster. There are songs from the Mario series, the The Legend of Zelda series and other Nintendo related music.

The Japanese, European, and US versions have different track lists. The different versions have between 31 and 33 songs.

Story

A screenshot of the Japanese Donkey Konga, playing the Super Mario Bros. theme on "Chimp" level.

Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are hanging out at the beach one day when they come across some mysterious objects that resemble barrels. Fearing they had something to do with King K. Rool, they take them to Cranky Kong. Cranky explains that they are bongos, so Donkey tries playing them. Diddy tries to do so as well. Then, when Donkey claps, the bongos started glowing. Cranky explained that the bongos had some kind of power inside them. Donkey and Diddy continue to play the bongos, but they both play terribly. Cranky advises them to practice. At first they are against this, but then they realize if they can become successful in playing the bongos, they could afford as many bananas as they wish, so they start practicing.

Sequels

Two sequels, Donkey Konga 2 and Donkey Konga 3 have been made. Donkey Konga 2 has been released in most regions, however there are no plans to release Donkey Konga 3 outside of Japan. The sequels are virtually the same as the original, the only major changes being different songs, minigames, background environments, and additional Donkey Kong characters.
