The Montana-born writer's first novel is inspired by the life of jazz musician Bix Beiderbecke in what is considered the first novel of consequence to document the jazz music scene. It would be dramatized in 1944. Her other books are Our Gifted Son (1948) and Cassandra at the Wedding (1962).
