download protocol

Computer Desktop Encyclopedia: download protocol

The communications protocol used to transmit a file to a user, also known as a file transfer protocol. For example, the Internet uses HTTP and FTP. Unix systems use FTP and UUCP. Using a general-purpose communications program to download from a BBS or private site requires selecting a common protocol at both ends. Zmodem has been widely used. See download.
