Eastland Mall is a regional shopping mall located on North Green River Road in Evansville, Indiana. It is operated by the Simon Property Group, a group which owns and develops malls around the United States. The mall has 130 specialty stores, three department stores, and a food court with a variety of fast food eateries and a TGI Friday's restaurant. The current roster of department stores include Dillard's, Macy's, and J.C. Penney.[1]

Sales per square foot are in the $400 range[citation needed], which is well above national averages for regional mall sales.[citation needed] As the regional hub of the Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois tri-state area, retail sales per capita are 60% higher for Evansville than the state average and are the highest in the state.[2] Total square footage for Eastland Mall is one million.[3]

History

The mall was originally developed by General Growth Properties and opened in 1982. The original anchors were Lazarus, J.C. Penney, Ben Snyder's, and deJong's. When Snyder's closed, along with the rest of the chain, it was replaced with Hess's. After the mall was acquired by Simon Property Group in 1998, it was expanded to provide a larger food court area as well as additional space for Famous-Barr, which built a new store on the former Hess's site. In 2005 the vacant deJong's location was converted into various specialty stores.

After the Federated and May Company department store merger in 2005, Lazarus was changed to Macy's and the Famous-Barr was closed in 2006. The former Famous-Barr location was converted into a Dillard's in 2007.[4]
