The fastest sea vessel was not even a ship: it was a plane/boat
hybrid called an ekranoplan that used the "ground effect" to keep
the vessel above the water as it "flew" at an altitude of a few
meters above the water. In effect, it was a seabound flying boat.
The Russian-built vessel called the Caspian Sea Monster was a
prototype that reached a test speed of 404 mph. Smaller versions
have served with the Soviet Navy.
The fastest actual ships are hovercraft designs such as the
Mountbatten class ferries, and their military counterparts that can
travel up to 95 mph. The "official" speed record is somewhat lower,
at about 86 mph.
