Biography

Tall, radiant, and sensual, British ingenue Emily Blunt caught the attention of the public and press when she starred (at age 20) opposite Natalie Press in Pawel Pawlikowski's gentle, finely told lesbian romance My Summer of Love (2004). In the eyes of many Americans, Blunt (who counted this as her first cinematic credit) seemed to arrive at the top instantaneously. In truth, Blunt -- a London native -- had established herself on British television (largely in BBC productions) several years prior.

Summer, however, represented the actress' big global break. She plays a sexually experienced and playfully manipulative teen who seduces the younger and more impressionable Press into an impassioned love affair, while the latter's brother (Paddy Considine) becomes a born-again evangelical Christian and carries his faith to torturous, alienating extremes. The work garnered enthusiastic notices and performed well on the international festival circuit; it thus marked a fortuitous and brazenly intelligent cinematic bow for a young actress. Newsweek's David Ansen was not alone when he tagged Blunt (along with her co-star, Press) as a "major discovery." Variety's Derek Elley observed, "Blunt's perf as the mysterious, mixed-up Tamsin grows, adding a sense of menace which coincides with...Considine's loony Phil."

After a supporting role in the U.S. miniseries Empire (about the Roman Empire), Blunt landed her second major break -- and culled even broader exposure -- with a supporting role in David Frankel's bittersweet drama The Devil Wears Prada. As Emily, the obnoxious (yet soft-hearted) assistant to fashion mogul Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), Blunt delivered a colorful and impressive performance. As a result, she received a 2007 Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Although she lost out to Jennifer Hudson at that ceremony, Blunt won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television for her work opposite Bill Nighy in Gideon's Daughter.

Blunt followed Prada up with planned supporting roles in such features as The Snow Goose (2006), The Girl in the Park (2007), Wind Chill (2007), The Great Buck Howard (2007), and The Jane Austen Book Club (2007). ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Personal life

Blunt is from Roehampton, London, England. She is one of four children born to Joanna (née Mackie), an English teacher and former actress, and barrister Oliver Blunt QC.[1][2][3] Her uncle is Crispin Blunt, Conservative MP for Reigate. At the age of 16 Blunt moved to a sixth-form college known for its performing arts programme, Hurtwood House, which is where she was discovered by an agent. Blunt previously shared a home with her ex-boyfriend, Canadian singer, Michael Bublé[4] whom she first met in Melbourne backstage at the Australian television Logie Awards in 2005. Bublé thought Blunt was a television producer when they met.[5] She later provided background vocals on his cover of "Me and Mrs. Jones" on his album Call Me Irresponsible.[6] She is currently engaged[7] to American actor John Krasinski who plays Jim Halpert on the hit television series The Office.[8]

Career

Blunt made her professional debut in Bliss, a new musical written by Paul Sellar, at the 2000 Edinburgh Fringe while she was still an A-level student. She also had a speech condition of stuttering and is now a supporter for a better life for people who stutter. She went on to perform at the National Theatre and at Chichester Festival Theatre. In 2003, she made her screen debut in the British television drama Boudica, about the life of the ancient British warrior-queen who fought the Romans. She also won considerable praise for her performance as the 16th-century queen Catherine Howard in the two-part British television drama Henry VIII.

Blunt's breakout role was as Tamsin in the dark British movie, My Summer of Love in 2004, which depicted a story of deception and lesbian love in the English countryside. She shared an Evening Standard British Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer with co-star Nathalie Press.

In 2005, she co-starred with Bill Nighy and Miranda Richardson in the British TV drama Gideon's Daughter, an original screenplay written and directed by Stephen Poliakoff, in which she played the troubled only child of New Labour spin doctor Gideon Warner, played by veteran British character actor Bill Nighy.

In 2006, she starred opposite Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway in the box-office success The Devil Wears Prada. Streep and Hathaway received most of the critical attention initially, but Blunt proved to be equally memorable with Entertainment Weekly naming her the Best Female Scene-Stealer in their end-of-summer special issue. She appeared at the 79th Academy Awards where she co-presented the award for best costume design with her Prada co-star Hathaway. Blunt and Hathaway lost weight for their roles in the film. In an interview with Us Weekly, Hathaway said “I basically stuck with fruit, vegetables and fish (to slim down for the movie). I wouldn't recommend that. Emily Blunt and I would clutch at each other and cry because we were so hungry." Blunt also spoke about the weight loss, claiming she had to go "painfully thin".[9]

Blunt co-starred with Susan Sarandon in the independent drama Irresistible. When Sarandon became attached to starring in another movie, The Girl In The Park, she strongly suggested that director David Auburn should cast her. Blunt did audition for the part, which she almost received but lost to Kate Bosworth. In 2007, she appeared in the film Charlie Wilson's War.

In 2009, she played Queen Victoria in The Young Victoria, directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and written by Julian Fellowes. The movie co-starred Miranda Richardson and Rupert Friend as the queen's husband, Prince Albert.

She has also worked on a number of upcoming movies: Wild Target, the Toby Spanton-directed short film Curiosity and The Wolfman.

Blunt was in the final stages to star as Black Widow in the upcoming Iron Man 2, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. That part then went to Scarlett Johansson.

She is lined up to play opposite Matt Damon in The Adjustment Bureau as a ballet dancer "being mysteriously kept apart" from Damon's character.[10][11]
