Check-processing technique that prints a computer-readable number on the check, representing the amount of the check. The encoded number is required for processing by the Federal Reserve banking system. The code is called "MICR" coding. Some direct marketers encode checks they receive from customers to save the cost of having the bank of deposit encode the checks for them.
