Review

If the title Enema of the State didn't give it away, it should be clear from songs like "Dumpweed," "What's My Age Again?," and "Dysentery Gary" that moving to a major label isn't a sign of maturity for blink-182. "Dammit (Growing Up)," the first single from their third album, Dude Ranch, brought them a wider audience and the attention of major labels, which was just too tempting to resist. They signed with MCA, but the only sign that Enema of the State is a major-label effort is the somewhat cleaner production and the fact that they could afford porn superstar Janine -- all decked out as (surprise!) an enema nurse -- for the album cover. Of course, the lovely Janine is as much an indication as "Going Away to College," a catchy little number that pretty much repeats the narrative of "Dammit": blink-182 is not growing up, no way, no how, nowhere. And that's fine, because few of their peers are quite as blissfully stupid and effortlessly catchy as them. Sure, they might not show the emotional depth of Green Day, but they have good tunes and deliver them in a speedy, punchy fashion. Enema of the State isn't going to change anyone's life -- unless it's the first time a 13-year-old boy has seen Janine -- and it will likely irritate old codgers, but it's a fun record that's better than the average neo-punk release. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Enema of the State, Blink-182's third, and most successful, studio album, was released June 1, 1999, on MCA Records and features the hits "What's My Age Again?", "Adam's Song" and "All the Small Things", which would later appear on their greatest hits compilation. It was Blink-182's first album recorded with drummer Travis Barker. The album was highly successful selling over 13 million copies worldwide, making it the band's best selling album, despite mediocre reviews. This album is an Enhanced CD which contains a bonus music video, and web links.

Production

Cover

Porn star Janine Lindemulder is the nurse depicted on the cover of this album. She is also featured in the music videos for "What's My Age Again?" and "Man Overboard". An emblem of the Red Cross was depicted on the nurse's cap on early pressings of the album cover. Shortly after, the Red Cross demanded that their symbol be removed from the cover[1] as it currently is on all printings. Similarly, early printings of the album were not given Parental Advisory stickers (neither on the case or printed on the cover) until shortly after the major success of the record.

Title

The title is a play on Enemy of the State, a film released in 1998. The CD of this album contains a hidden second title on the internal spine of the CD inlay, in white on a yellow background is the text "Viking Wizard Eyes, Wizard Full of Lies" - there is some debate as to whether this was an intended name for the album which was abandoned, lyrics from an unfinished/abandoned song or a reference to a poem.

Recording & Gear

An Enema of the State Demo was originally recorded as sometime between 1998-1999. It is rumored that Scott Raynor, the previous Blink-182 drummer, may have recorded the drums on Mutt in this demo[2].

While recording Enema Of The State, Mark Hoppus used Fender Jazz Basses, Fender Precision Basses, and Ernie Ball Music Man Bass Guitars. Tom Delonge used Gibson Les Paul guitars, and his signature Fender Stratocaster.
