A rule of civil procedure permitting a court to extend the expiration period for any act required or allowed to be done at or within a specified time. See Fed. R. Civ. Proc. 6(b). Once cause is shown, the court may act in its discretion with or without motion or notice if the period has not expired; if the period has expired, the court can only act upon motion where the failure to act was the result of excusable neglect.
