There are 16 different species of Hedgehogs. All of them are listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, (IUCN) the Red List, with a status of "least concern". Some have different population trends, but most of these are generally "decreasing", or "unknown". There are no species of Hedgehogs listed with a status of endangered on the IUCN Red List now, or listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Endangered Species List either. In September 2008 the Western European Hedgehog - Erinaceous Europae - was added to the United Kingdom Biodiversity Action Plan species list, which now comprises 1,149 different species that are considered threatened in the U.K. The hedgehog joined the BAP list of species in need of conservation and greater protection because the European hedgehog's numbers have decreased by up to 50 percent in some areas of the UK.
