There were several really great medieval queens. One who comes
to mind immediately was Margaret I of Denmark. Ethelfleda of Mercia
was another. Another was Eleanor of Aquitaine.

The first castle to appear on the site was a wooden motte and
bailey constructed in 1068 at the command of William the
Conqueror.
There is still the remains of a motte to the south-west of the
present castle, this is now called "Ethelfleda's Mound"

Tamworth Castle was built in the year 913 by Ethelfleda, Lady of
the Mercians. It is now owned by the Tamworth Borough Council.
