Euphrasius

Euphrasius, bishop and martyr, supposedly 1st century. He was bishop of Illiturgi (Andujar), Spain. He was one of the shadowy ‘Varones Apostolicos’ like Cecilius of Granada, believed to have been disciples of the apostles and sent by them to evangelize Spain. They worked mainly in southern Spain; most of them were claimed to be martyrs, and their communal feast was celebrated in the Mozarabic Liturgy. Euphrasius' relics were taken to Samos (Galicia) for safety when the Moslems invaded Spain. He is patron of Corsica and of Ajaccio. This seems to have been due to a secondary translation of his relics. Feast: 15 May.
