Exposition Universelle, Paris, 1855, promoted by Napoleon III in answer to London's 1851 Great Exhibition, and the first of five world exhibitions staged in France in the late 19th century. Memorably photographed by C. Thurston Thompson (1816-68), the Bisson brothers, and R. J. Bingham, the fair boasted over 20, 000 exhibitors from 34 countries. Photography was shown separately from fine art, in Group VII with ‘drawing and arts applied to industry’. Nevertheless, the medium had a strong presence, and 65 French studios alone were represented.
