(medicine) A severe form of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum and characterized by sudden attacks of chills, fever, and sweating at irregular intervals; the infecting organism usually localizes in a specific organ, causing capillary blockage. Also known as alged malaria; estivoautumnal malaria; malignant malaria; pernicious malaria.

Malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum and characterized by severe malarial paroxysms that recur about every 48 hours and often by acute cerebral, renal, or gastrointestinal manifestations. Also called malignant tertian malaria.
