Famciclovir-- An oral antiviral drug that is available under the trade name Famvir. The drug blocks the replication of the varicella zoster virus.

Although there is no cure for genital herpes, outbreaks just prior to delivery may be prevented by acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), or valacyclover (Valtrex).

Famciclovir is an oral drug used to reduce the time period of a herpes outbreak and suppress subsequent outbreaks. After taking the prescribed dose, it takes an average of five days until the herpes outbreak crusts over and clears. The most reported side effects of this medication include headaches and nausea. Physicians do not recommend Famciclovir for people who have a kidney impairment. This herpes treatment is also not suitable for pregnant and nursing women.

Use of antiviral creams, such as acyclovir, valtrex, and famvir can be used to fight the outbreak.
