federated directories

Computer Desktop Encyclopedia:

federated directories

A collection of directories that are treated as one entity. For network administration, it means that multiple directories throughout the entire enterprise; for example, multiple forests in an Active Directory environment, can be combined and treated as a single hierarchical directory. They can also share rights and privileges. See Cross-Forest Trust and federated.
