A circular rail about the mainmast, to which lines and sheets
were bound to and by belaying pins. It is known as the fife rail
because in ships smaller than frigates, the 'music' was provided by
a single fife (pipe) and drum. The 'beat' to quarters, for example,
was performed by the 'fife and drum', close to the mainmast, both
fifer and drummer touching the fife rail.
