Fine Gael
Major political party in Ireland, also known as United Ireland Party. It was founded in 1933 in the amalgamation of several parties, including the Cumann na nGaedheal ("Party of the Irish"), which had been formed by members of the Dáil (Assembly) who accepted the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921. Fine Gael's traditional rival was Fianna Fáil, the dominant party in Irish politics from the 1930s to the early 21st century. Fine Gael governed in multiparty coalitions (1948 – 51, 1954 – 57), with Labour (1973 – 77, 1981 – 82, 1982 – 87, 2011 – ), and with Labour and the Democratic Left (1994 – 97).
