The first national flag of the Confederate States of America, the design of which was proposed by Professor Nicola Marschall and adopted by the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States on March 4, 1861. The Stars and Bars resembled somewhat the national flag of the United States. It had a blue canton with seven white stars, one for each state then part of the Confederacy, and three horizontal stripes, the top and bottom ones red and the middle one white.
