If all the syllables in the name Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University start to rattle around in your mouth, just call it Florida A&M like everyone else -- or simply FAMU. With a student body of more than 13,000 attending its schools and colleges, FAMU is known for its pharmacy, education, and engineering programs. Its Rattlers football team attracts nearly as much of a following as the crosstown Florida State Seminoles; the famed Marching "100" is regarded as one of the nation's most creative bands. FAMU, a historically black institution, was founded in 1887 on a former slave plantation. It is one of nine institutions in Florida's State University System.
