    1. A large sheet of paper folded once in the middle, making two leaves or four pages of a book or manuscript.
    2. A book or manuscript of the largest common size, usually about 38 centimeters (15 inches) in height, consisting of such folded sheets.
    1. A leaf of a book numbered only on the front side.
    2. A number on such a leaf.
    3. A page number.

Folio was developed by Utah-based Folio Corporation, acquired by Open Market in 1997 and NextPage, Inc. in 1999. Fast Search purchased the publishing applications business unit of NextPage in 2004, which included the Folio, LivePublish, NXT and GetSmart software products.

(2) (folio) In typography, a printed page number. For example, folio 3 could be the 27th physical page in a book. A "blind folio" is a page number accounted for in pagination but not printed on the page. These occur most frequently on blank left book pages or opening pages of a chapter or article.

The collected editions of Shakespeare's plays published after his death, as distinct from the earlier unauthorized quarto editions, are often referred to as the Folios: the First Folio was published by his colleagues Heming and Condell in 1623, and three others followed in 1632, 1663, and 1685.
