(fôr'', fôrt, fōrt) pronunciation
n.
  1. Something in which a person excels.
  2. The strong part of a sword blade, between the middle and the hilt.

[French fort, from Old French, strong, from Latin fortis. See fort.]

SYNONYMS   forte, métier, specialty, thing. These nouns denote something at which a person is particularly skilled: Writing fiction is her forte. The theater is his métier. The professor's specialty was the study of ancient languages. Mountain climbing is really my thing.

USAGE NOTE   The word forte, coming from French fort, should properly be pronounced with one syllable, like the English word fort. Common usage, however, prefers the two-syllable pronunciation, (fôr'tā'), which has been influenced possibly by the music term forte borrowed from Italian. In a recent survey a strong majority of the Usage Panel, 74 percent, preferred the two-syllable pronunciation. The result is a delicate situation; speakers who are aware of the origin of the word may wish to continue to pronounce it as one syllable but at an increasing risk of puzzling their listeners.

for·te2 (fôr'') pronunciation Music.
adv. & adj. (Abbr. f)
In a loud, forceful manner. Used chiefly as a direction.

n.
A note, passage, or chord played forte.

[Italian, strong, forte, from Latin fortis.]

There are two distinct though related words with this spelling. One (pronounced faw-tay or faw-ti) comes directly from Latin fortis meaning 'strong' and means 'a person's strong point'. The plural, if needed, is fortes. The other (pronounced faw-ti) comes via Italian forte and is an instruction in music to play a passage loudly or strongly. It is also used as a noun meaning such a passage, and the plural is again fortes.

    Biography

Forte was a long-running Oklahoma progressive thrash/power metal outfit initially similar in sound to Metal Church and Jag Panzer, later comparable to Dream Theater, and founded by the Scott brothers -- guitarist Jeff and drummer Greg -- in 1987. Together with singer James Randel and bassist Ghames Jones, they recorded their debut album, Stranger Than Fiction, for the Massacre label in 1992, then replaced Randel with Bill Dollins prior to 1994's sophomore Division. David Thompson then replaced Dollins for 1997's Destructive, an album that also introduced bassist Richard Sharpe. This lineup stayed together long enough to record one final album, Rise Above, in 1999, but despite supposedly reuniting with original vocalist James Randel, Forte has yet to record in the new millennium. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi

    Forte/Forté may refer to:

    • Forte, /ˈfɔrt/ but often /ˈfɔrt/;.[1] A person's strong point[1] e.g. Preparing gourmet cuisine is his forte. The term is derived from the French fort meaning strength, which does not include an acute accent. The latter pronunciation is likely due to a confusion as a false cognate with the musical term below which comes from Italian. For this reason it is sometimes asserted to be incorrect despite having entered common usage, with usage writers recommending the former as more strictly correct. Though the preferred pronunciation does not precisely reflect the French either, where it is pronounced closer to the English word 'for'.[2]
    • Forte (music), a musical dynamic meaning "loudly" or "strong"
    • Forte number, an ordering given to every pitch class set
