Belleforest, François de (1530-83). Orphaned at an early age, Belleforest was raised by Marguerite de Navarre. After studying law at Bordeaux and Toulouse, he moved to Paris, where he became Historiographe du Roi. He published over 50 titles: histories such as Histoire des neuf rois Charles de France (1568); Les Grandes Annales … de France … (1579), which stressed the Gaulish origins of the Franks; L'Innocence de … Madame Marie, reine d'Écosse (1572), a defence of the queen against Protestant criticism. He wrote poetry (see La Pastorale Amoureuse, 1569), but is best remembered for his translations (Latin, Spanish, Italian), especially his adaptation of Bandello's Histoires tragiques (1560-80) [see Boaistuau].
