Biography

This Spanish singer, editor and composer was considered a prodigy and later in life, 1562, he competed for and won a position in the papal choir in Rome. He maintained this position until his death. He drew large crowds when he sang laude composed by Animuccia upon Neri's request. By 1590 he was elected as an interim papal choir master and was instrumental in publishing some posthumous works of Juan Navarro. An important collection of spiritual songs is attributed to the work of Solo de Langa, five anthologies in all. Only a few of the laude in these collections can be directly ascribed to Solo as his compositions. Characteristics include strong vertical harmonies and balanced phrases. ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide
