(b Newton Abbot, Devon, 22 Nov 1854; d Southend, Essex, 17 May 1920). English architect. He first trained in the office of George S. Bridgeman (1839-c. 1900) at Paignton, Devon. Later Matcham moved to London and joined the practice of Jethro T. Robinson, architect to Hengler's Circus and Theatre Consultant to the Lord Chamberlain. From the latter connection Matcham derived a thorough grounding in theatre building regulations.
