Fred Wilpon.
In January 1980, the original owners (the Paysons) sold the Mets
to Doubleday publishing company for $21.1. Nelson Doubleday, Jr.
was named chairman of the board and minority shareholder, Fred
Wilpon, became club president. The teams 2002 problems reached the
offices of the co-owners Wilpon and Doubleday, who were thrown into
a legal battle over Wilpon's attempt to but Doubleday's half of The
Mets. Eventually, after lawsuits and suing, Wilpon became the sole
owner of the Mets on August 23, 2002.
