  1. Anatomy. A slender cordlike strand or band, especially:
    1. A bundle of nerve fibers in a nerve trunk.
    2. One of three major divisions of white matter in the spinal cord, consisting of fasciculi.
    3. The umbilical cord.
  2. Botany. A stalk connecting an ovule or a seed with the placenta.

Pl. funiculi [L.] a cord; a cordlike structure or part, especially one of the large bundles of nerve tracts making up the white matter of the spinal cord.

  • dorsal f. — the white substance of the spinal cord lying on either side between the dorsal median septum and the dorsal root.
  • lateral f., f. lateralis — the lateral mass of fibers on either side of the spinal cord, between the dorsolateral and ventrolateral sulci.
  • f. spermaticus — see spermatic cord.
  • f. spinalis — see spinal cord.
  • ventral f — the white substance of the spinal cord lying on either side between the ventral median fissure and the ventrolateral sulcus.
