Fyvush Finkel was a fifty-year veteran of Yiddish theater when he became an "overnight" celebrity, as eccentric and often annoying attorney "Douglas Wambaugh" on the TV series Picket Fences.
Finkel was born on October 9, 1923, in Brooklyn, NY. He was called by his Yiddish name, Fyvush, though his English name is Philip. First appearing on stage when he was nine years old, Finkel worked steadily over the next half-century. In 1965, he landed a small part in the national touring company production of Fiddler on the Roof, and eventually ended up playing the lead role of Tevye, both on the road and, finally, on Broadway. He was with the production for twelve years. Later, he won an Obie for his work off-Broadway, in the New York Shakespeare Festival production of the Yiddish classic Crown Cafe.
In 1986, Finkel made his film debut in the detective comedy Off Beat, continuing to get small parts over the next few years. Producer David Kelley hired him for the role of "Douglas Wambaugh", a role which earned him an Emmy award in 1994. After Picket Fences went off the air, Finkel became a regular on a remake of Fantasy Island, and, then was cast, again by David Kelley, as the aging, problematic history teacher "Harvey Lipschultz" in Boston Public.
Finkel has been married to Trudi Lieberman since 1947, and together they have two sons.
