The word, "gallinaceous" (Latin "gallina = hen, gallus = cock") is an adjective that relates to birds of the Order: Galliformes. These are birds that have large, heavy bodies, sometimes called terrestrial birds. Members of this order are ground-feeding birds like chickens, turkeys, peafowl, grouse, ptarmigans, quail, and partridge. They are important human food sources, predators, and seed dispersers. Most are good, fast runners and usually fly only for short distances.
