(GAM-uht)

noun
The complete range of something.

Etymology
From Medieval Latin, contraction of gamma ut, from gamma (third letter of the Greek alphabet), used to represent the lowest tone + ut, from the names of the notes ut, re, mi, fa, sol, la, si (ut and si later changed to do and ti). Gamma + ut contracted to gamut and the meaning expanded to denote all notes. The names of the notes are derived from the initial syllables of a Latin hymn

Usage
"'Our biggest problem is basic infrastructure strain, and that covers the gamut - electricity, water, telephone service - you name it, we have continuous basic problems with all of them,' [Alain Tiphaine] said." — Luis Ramos; Caribbean Business; Puerto Rico Herald; Jul 8, 2004.

The entire range of colors available on a particular device such as a monitor or printer. A monitor, which displays RGB signals, typically has a greater color gamut than a printer, which uses CMYK inks. When a color is "out of gamut," it cannot be properly converted to the target device; for example, to a different type of printer. See color management system and color space.

Gammut in 1707 Glossographia

The term gamut originally referred to the lowest note (the "gamma-ut") in the musical scale used in medieval music devised by Guido of Arezzo, and then to the entirety of the medieval musical scale.[1] From this notion of a complete range, the term came to be applied to other fields, including as a completely general term.

In English this term most often is used in phrases of the form: "... runs the gamut ..." (often followed by phrases such as "from ___ to ____" or "of ___" which define the range that is being traversed).

Gamut can therefore refer to:
