The entire range of colors available on a particular device such as a monitor or printer. A monitor, which displays RGB signals, typically has a greater color gamut than a printer, which uses CMYK inks. When a color is "out of gamut," it cannot be properly converted to the target device; for example, to a different type of printer. See color management system and color space.

The term gamut originally referred to the lowest note (the "gamma-ut") in the musical scale used in medieval music devised by Guido of Arezzo, and then to the entirety of the medieval musical scale.[1] From this notion of a complete range, the term came to be applied to other fields, including as a completely general term.

In English this term most often is used in phrases of the form: "... runs the gamut ..." (often followed by phrases such as "from ___ to ____" or "of ___" which define the range that is being traversed).
