Biography

Born in Manchester, England, under the name Gary Mounfield -- but, with the British tradition of assigning single-word nicknames, permanently known simply as Mani -- the cherubic-looking bassist's most important contribution to music was perhaps his nine-year stint in the Stone Roses. Having replaced founding member Pete Garner in 1987, Mani appeared on all of the Roses' seminal albums and singles beginning with "Elephant Stone." His bass lines -- indebting to Joy Division/New Order's Peter Hook, yet just as aggressive and signature -- on such tracks like "I Wanna Be Adored" and "Fools Gold" stand as some of the best and immediately recognizable from the late-'80s Madchester scene. Furthermore, his genuine and outgoing personality made him a recognizable fan favorite amongst the British rock scene.

As the Stone Roses languished to complete the follow-up to their debut album, and bandmates John Squire and Ian Brown seemingly disappeared from the landscape, Mani became more present and vocal in the press. This became especially true when, following the release of Second Coming, John Squire abruptly left the band in 1996, with Mani being quite outspoken in the press about Squire's reasons for abandoning the Stone Roses. As such, he himself stuck with lead singer Ian Brown (by then the only other original member of the group) through their final appearance at the 1996 Reading Festival. Following the generally disappointing performance, Mani announced that the Stone Roses were disbanding and that he was joining Primal Scream, who were "one of only three other bands [he] would ever consider joining" (the others were later revealed as the Jesus & Mary Chain and Oasis). Now a part of another founding member of the Madchester scene, Mani helped re-energize the band, making his first appearances on "Motorhead" and the single "Kowalski" off of 1997's Vanishing Point. Mani's bass lines also helped propel 2000's stand-out XTRMNTR, proving that, even with 15-plus years of performing behind him, he still had the ability to help create ultimately modern and important music.

In addition to his role in Primal Scream, Mani also made late-'90s appearances on albums by Dot Allison and the solo debuts by ex-bandmates Ian Brown and Aziz Ibrahim; and, of all the Stone Roses', he also seemed to leave the door widest for a possible reconciliation, often referring to the band as "unfinished business" during interviews. ~ Aaron Warshaw, All Music Guide

Biography

Mounfield attended Xaverian College in the Rusholme district of Manchester. At that time his declared ambition was to be a chef.[citation needed] He left school aged sixteen in 1979 and joined the band The Stone Roses (part of the "Madchester" music scene) in 1987. Playing on both of the band's albums, Mounfield was in The Stone Roses until they disbanded in 1996, when he joined Primal Scream who he claimed were one of three bands other than the Roses that he would accept the offer from to become a member (the others are reportedly The Jesus and Mary Chain and Beastie Boys)[2]. In 2003 he toured with Ocean Colour Scene and did a dj set for them at their December 2008 Manchester gig, whose own bassist Damon Minchella had recent Stereophonics. He is still a full time Primal Scream member.

He has a guest role in the movie 24 Hour Party People (2002).

Mounfield has often been viewed as the most amiable member of the Roses, both while the band were still together and since their break-up. Whilst in the past he had claimed that the band would reform only after "Man City won the European Cup", he is also viewed as the most likely to be up for a Roses reunion. He occasionally joins Ian Brown on stage for renditions of Stone Roses songs (Waterfall, Made of Stone, I Am The Resurrection), as happened in 2008 at Summercase Festival (in Madrid and Barcelona), when both Primal Scream and Brown were playing on the same day.

Recently, Mounfield and ex-Stone Roses drummer Reni were interviewed for the Manchester Music show on BBC GMR whilst attending a gig by The Coral. Mounfield toured with The Enemy on their UK tour.[citation needed]

Mounfield is an enthusiastic Manchester United F.C. fan. He regularly showcases his love for the team on the Sky One programme, "Football Years," giving his views on football seasons of the past.[citation needed] He also revealed on Play UK programme "Nu Music" that he supports Celtic F.C. in Scotland and, although he is English, he was brought up to support the Republic of Ireland national football team. He has also appeared on the football programme Soccer AM numerous times, earning himself a "Hat-trick Ball" from the show as a result.[citation needed]

He is currently in a band called Freebass with bass players Andy Rourke (ex-The Smiths) and Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order).[citation needed]

Mounfield made a guest appearance on the stv fishing show Trout 'n About along with former Primal Scream guitarist Throb and presenters Gregor Rankine and Paul Campion as they go trout fishing at Drummond Trout Farm & Fishery in Scotland.

Mounfield appeared at the "Manchester Versus Cancer" event on 30 March 2007, performing a DJ set and appearing with Ian Brown for the finale, which was the Stone Roses classic "I Am The Resurrection".[citation needed]
