Biography

Guitarist and drummer Gary Rossington earned a place in music history as one of the founding members of the legendary rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd. Rossington was born in Jacksonville, FL, on (December 4, 1951). He quickly experienced tragedy in his life, with the death of his father. The loss caused Rossington to bond closely with his mother. In fact, when he finally purchased his first top-of-the-line guitar, he named it Berniece after his mother.

Rossington started out playing drums, not the guitar that he is best known for. In the early '60s, he and friend Bob Burns began to practice together with normal childhood dreams of being rock stars. There was one problem though, they both played drums. Rossington decided to turn his attention to the guitar. That meant he had to work hard to save enough money to get one -- and then he had to learn how to play it. Luck would have it that not long after this time his sister Carol was seeing Lloyd Phillips, a fast guitarist. Phillips helped young Rossington get the hang of most of the basics a new player needed to master.

Rossington and Burns soon enlisted another friend, bass guitarist Larry Junstrom, to join their little amateur band, You, Me and Him. By 1965, Rossington and Burns had teamed up with Allen Collins and Ronnie VanZant. The wind didn't grow still, the stars didn't glow extra bright in the sky, but surely the keeper of rock history noted this first coming together of what would be Lynyrd Skynyrd.

It took years of practice and many nightly gigs at small bars and clubs before the band's sound became what fans hear when they pop in a CD filled with hits from those early days. Rossington, as a Skynyrd member, was on his way to fame by 1973. The band's success seemed unstoppable by 1976. And then in 1977, Lynyrd Skynyrd came to a crashing end when the plane carrying the band members fell from the sky, coming to rest in a mangled heap in the woods of a Mississippi swamp. Ronnie VanZant, Steve Gaines, and his sister Cassie, all lost their lives that night, along with road manager Dean Kilpatrick. Rossington was one of the lucky survivors, but he didn't walk away from the crash. He had been literally broken into pieces. His pelvic bone was broken, some ribs, as well as bones in his feet, along with both wrists, both arms, and both legs.

After years of painful recovery, Rossington joined up with Collins and a couple other old Skynyrd members to form the Rossington-Collins Band in 1980. The groups debut offering, Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere, did well, but things still slowly fell apart and within a couple of years, after recording only one more album, Rossington and Collins parted ways.

Rossington married and moved to the mountains, leaving the hustle of the music world far behind until 1986. By 1987 there was a Skynyrd reunion and tribute tour. Rossington joined in, and the ride lasted for three years. In 1991 Rossington was in on the recording of another Lynyrd Skynyrd album, the first one since the plane crash to feature new tunes. Another album followed along with tours in American and Europe. ~ Charlotte Dillon, All Music Guide

Gary Robert Rossington (born December 4, 1951 in Jacksonville, Florida, USA) is a founding member of Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He plays lead and rhythm guitar. He is also a founding member of The Rossington-Collins Band along with former Lynyrd Skynyrd bandmate Allen Collins.

Rossington formed the band as a teenager with friends Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Larry Junstrom and Bob Burns in the summer of 1964. Skynyrd gained national exposure starting in 1973 with the release of their first album (pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd) and hit single "Free Bird".

Rossington's instrument of choice was a '59 Gibson Les Paul that he purchased from a woman whose boyfriend had left her and left behind his guitar. He named it "Berneice" in honor of his mother who he was very close to. Rossington has yielded many memorable guitar parts, including the lead work on "Tuesday's Gone" and the slide guitar for "Free Bird". Along with Collins, Rossington also provided the guitar work for the popular "Simple Man".

On Labor Day weekend of 1976, Gary Rossington and fellow Skynyrd guitarist Allen Collins were both involved in separate car wrecks in their hometown of Jacksonville. Rossington had just bought a new Ford Torino, and hit an oak tree while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The band was due to go on tour in a couple of days, but had to postpone this tour due to Rossington's accident. The band members were not at all pleased with Rossington, and fined him $5000 for the delay caused to the band's schedule. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Allen Collins wrote the song "That Smell" based on the wreck and Rossington's state of influence from drugs and alcohol at the time. "Whiskey bottles and brand new cars, oak tree you're in my way. There's too much coke and too much smoke."

Rossington was one of six band members who survived the October 20, 1977 plane crash near Gillsburg, Mississippi that took the lives of Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist/vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines and three others. Despite breaking both arms, both legs, both wrists, both ankles and his pelvis, Rossington would eventually recover from his injuries and play on stage again (albeit with a steel rod in his right arm and in one of his legs). He battled with serious drug addiction throughout the next several years partially as a result of his heavy dependence on medication taken during his recovery from the plane crash.

In 1980, Rossington co-founded The Rossington-Collins Band with Allen Collins. The band released two albums, but disbanded in 1982 after the death of Allen Collins' wife, Kathy.

Gary Rossington still plays in the current Lynyrd Skynyrd lineup. With the death of keyboardist Billy Powell on January 28, 2009, Rossington is now the only original band member left in the reformed band. Rickey Medlocke played with the band as a drummer in 1970 and part of '71 before reforming Blackfoot, but is not on original member.

Gary and Dale Krantz-Rossington have had two daughters, Mary and Annie. Their side project, the Rossington Band, opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd during their 1987-88 reunion tour. The Rossington Band released the following albums: Returned to the Scene of the Crime, 1986 and Love Your Man in 1988.

Gary Rossington and wife Dale Krantz-Rossington were unable to go on the Gimme Three Days Cruise in January 2007 due to Gary being ill. He had a heart problem which was successfully operated on. Rossington also occasionally experiences pain in his legs severe enough to force him to miss shows; this is an ongoing by-product of the 1977 plane crash.[citation needed]
