The prophet, Zarathushtra (Zoroaster), son of Pourushaspa, of the Spitaman family, founded the Zoroastrian religion in which heaven as a place of reward, hell as a place of punishment and a Judgement Day are central themes. Zoroaster is known primarily from the Gathas, seventeen great hymns which he composed in a dialect known only from the Gathas and a few other ancient texts. The language points to Zoroaster living in southern Russia around 1700 BCE. Zoroastrianism travelled to eastern Iran then, much later, to Persia in western Iran.
