Computers in general are important to geomatics, primarily as a
means of storing and organising the large amount of data involved
in typical geomatic fields, which includes GPS navigation.
Ultimately, your in-car GPS would simply not work without
programming. But geomatics is relatively new (circa 1969) and
computers capable of presenting the data visually, in real-time,
have only recently begun to appear. The technology is constantly
evolving, finding new uses in more and more fields of study, and
computer programming is naturally at the forefront of that
evolution.
